Welcome to the 2023-24 school year!
My name is Jessica Marshall and I am Yerba Buena’s Proud Principal. I am joining the YB family after being the Assistant Principal at Lindero Canyon Middle School. Before that, I was an elementary educator for 17 years in Thousand Oaks. I enjoyed teaching all levels from Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade. I am bilingual and biliterate in Spanish. In my free time I love to hike, exercise, read books, see live music and performances, and be at the beach. My husband Jonathan and I have three children: Mia, who is in 9th grade, and twins Andrew and Olivia who are in 5th grade. We have two energetic dogs named Tanner and Max who keep us very busy and active.
This year we will “Dare Mighty Things.” This abbreviated phrase comes from a speech given by Theodore Roosevelt in 1899 that has become the motto for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The idea behind this quote is that success is not linear, and failure is what allows us to soak in the eventual glory of success. It is a great reminder to use our setbacks as jet fuel toward our goals and beyond! Most recently, this phrase was “hidden” in binary code on the parachute of the Perseverance Rover sent to Mars, and therefore is the inspiration for our theme design! There will be multiple opportunities throughout the year for teachers and students to brainstorm how we can live this motto out in practical ways.
In addition to our rigorous and engaging curriculum and classroom instruction, we have several programs to foster a multifaceted educational experience. We look forward to continuing our amazing arts program with full-time performing and visual arts teachers to provide rich learning experiences for all students. We will be working on building our character through classroom lessons on Strengths of Mind, Strengths of Heart, and Strengths of Will. This year we will continue to build upon our kindness program across our campus and community with student-led initiatives. Additionally, our students will create, design, and explore in our Innovation Station filled with tech tools, art supplies, and STEAM opportunities.
Safety and a positive school climate is a top priority at YB. I look forward to working together with each of our students, staff members, and families to ensure our campus is a fun and safe place to learn.
It is my goal to be as accessible as possible, so please come by anytime to schedule an appointment or feel free to send me an email or call. We are all here to help your family have an amazing school year!
Warmly,
Jessica Marshall
