Dear 5th Grade Families,
I am sure that many of you have questions about the unique experience of being a 5th grader at YB. There are some special things that the 5th graders will get to do this year. The 5th Grade Activities Committee and I would like to give you a brief run-down of what is in store.
Activities
There are several activities related specifically to 5th graders that will take place later this year. Obviously, more detailed information will come home about each one as the dates get closer, but here is a brief outline of what to expect:
- Outdoor Ed: We are going to a new camp for Outdoor Ed this year: King Gillette Ranch, which is on the former Soka University property (across from Malibu Creek State Park). Yerba Buena’s week this year is February 11-15. The cost will be approximately $280, which covers everything for the week (the fundraising we do does not get applied to this activity; this one is strictly personal). This event is run wholly through the school district. The PFA’s role is simply to pass along relevant information to you as it comes out. There will be a detailed parent information night as we get closer. I will let you know as soon as this date, and the date that the paperwork will be available, are set.
- End of Year Party: The 5th grade party is scheduled to take place at Camp Keystone Camp on June 17th. We have had our party there for the past several years, ad the kids and the teachers love it. The students will come to school as usual, and will be taken to and from the park on buses. Supervision is provided by Keystone, and the teachers will be there as well. This is a kids only event – Keystone has asked that parents do not attend.
- Rite of Passage: This event will take place the morning of June 18, in the Multi-Purpose Room. Usually the ceremony begins right after school starts, around 8:30. There will be a small reception afterwards.
- Miscellaneous: In addition to the above, there are a few other traditions for 5th graders, including a softball game and a yearbook signing/popsicle party. Those dates will probably not be set until much later in the year. There will also be an opportunity to purchase a space for a special tribute to your child that will appear in the yearbook.
Volunteers
There are many, many opportunities to volunteer as a 5th grade parent. Everyone is welcome to contribute. While most of our subcommittees have “heads,” we still need someone to head up the Rite of Passage group (coordinating with Mr. Noyes on decorations and food for the morning). Our fundraising efforts are each going to be, hopefully, individually run so that no one person is overwhelmed by the job, but I would also love for there to be one person willing to oversee all of those people. If you are not currently on the volunteer list for 5th grade activities and would like to be, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the people working on the area in which you are interested.
Fundraising
Fundraising is a huge part of what the 5th grade committee does. The funds we raise are used to 1) offset the cost of the End of Year Party and Rite of Passage; and 2) purchase a class gift to present to the school and small tokens for the teachers. The more successful our fundraising efforts, the less the parents will be asked to contribute to these things. We are working on new ways to raise these funds beyond the usual bake sales. We are currently planning at least two different restaurant nights and possibly a yard sale. In fact, our first restaurant night at The Alamo is coming right up on Dec. 1 (click here to print out the flyer). We would like to add to that a few more restaurant nights and a See's Candy sale or two, but we are in need of people to head those up. If you have any ideas for other fundraisers please let us know – we would love the input!
Communication
Please take the time to check for flyers on Fridays, and read the bulletin each month for announcements. You can also check this web page for updates. I would like to put together an e-mail group just for 5th grade, so please make sure that I have your e-mail address so that you can receive any updates I might send out. This is particularly important if you are not listed in the directory. It will be your responsibility to check these 4 places to keep track of any deadlines that arise.
I am looking forward to a great year, and I hope that you are too! If you have any questions about anything or want to get involved, please contact me at
