Enrichment Classes: Spring Session 2010

You are enrolled in a class unless otherwise notified.
Each Enrichment Class lasts 8 weeks.


General Info



Hip-Hop Class for Boys and Girls


Get ready to dance to your favorite pop music sensation. Each class will begin with a warm up, followed by learning hip hop routines that will be performed at the culmination of the session. During the dance workshop, each student will strengthen their confidence and performance skills, in an environment that encourages them to explore, develop and share their talents and imagination.

Drama Club


Students will gain self-esteem, language skills, creativity and self expression while learning performance skills, acting techniques, improvisations and theater games. The workshop will culminate in a play, highlighting their talents. The magic of theater will be taught in a nonjudgmental, positive and fun environment.

Soccer


Kids will have fun while they learn and reinforce a variety of soccer skills.  This will prepare them for playing in recreational leagues.  Skills taught include dribbling, passing, shooting, offense, defense and teamwork.  Benefits include developing/enhancing movement skills, eye-foot coordination, self-confidence, learning teamwork and improving concentration.

Sportsmania (Basketball, Soccer, T-Ball)


Classes are fun and skill development oriented, not competitive.  Kids learn how to play a variety of sports.  Warm-up and stretching begin each class.

Tennis

Kids will learn the fundamental skills of tennis.  At YB, staff utilizes portable nets, and downsized racquets.  Tennis skills that will be taught include grips, forehand, backhand, serving, return of serve, volleys, footwork, rules and scoring.

Flag Football

  


This class is designed to teach fundamental skills so those children can learn to play on a recreational Flag Football.  Skills taught include passing, receiving, blocking and punting with a focus on developing strategies, plays teamwork, rules and scoring.

Volleyball


This class is designed to teach fundamental skills so those children can learn to play on a recreational Volleyball Team if they would like to.  Kids will learn movement skills, eye-hand coordination, bumping, passing, spiking, serving, return of serve, teamwork, rules and scoring.

Clay Class


In this class, students will make a tall vase, a cookie jar, a picture frame and a creation of their imagination.  Techniques such as coiling, pinching, and slab building will be covered.  Once painted and fired, your child’s artwork will spring to life from our kilns to your home.  Kitchen utensils will be stored, cookies will taste better, pictures will hand nicely and imaginations will soar to the uniqueness of your child’s creativity!

Academic Chess


We are devoted to promoting the merits of chess among children by using stories, dances and catchy songs to make the game of chess exciting and easy to understand.  Instruction includes eight weeks of chess instruction, a tournament for all participants, exclusive Academic Chess books and prizes awarded to all students.

Mad Science


We spark imaginative learning when school is out! Our science programs are themed around a particular area of science.  Children engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, participate in inquiry-based discussions and take home things that they have made themselves like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty and more. Mad Science after-school programs offer children a chance to see just how cool science can be.

Chorus


Does your child love to sing?  Join the YB chorus.  Your child will learn voice production, harmony, diction, listening and blending skills and have fun preparing for our show.

Woodshop


Every session begins a new and exciting woodshop project. Students learn about tools, design and assembly. Woodshop is fun, rewarding and educational. Participants take pride in creating something out of wood. During the process they are both
learning and having fun. We teach basic woodshop skills with a focus on safety. Children learn how to saw, glue, measure, drill, nail, follow directions, think for themselves and design. Everyone remembers woodshop.

Lego Animation


Ready to take your fascination with Legos to the next level?   Bring in your favorite Legos, or use ours to create amazing movies.  The ideas will be yours, the sets will be built by you, and you will operate all the equipment to bring your masterpiece to the big screen.  Whether it’s a re-creation of an epic pirate battle scene, or an adventure in another galaxy, this class is the ultimate place to play with Legos.  All movies will be professionally edited and available to view and download.

Drawing


Young Rembrandts teaches children how to draw using an engaging method that all children can succeed with. We learn about drawing and art while developing academic, conceptual, and critical thinking skills. Our artists can expect to draw a new exciting lesson every class, learn true artist concepts in art, drawing and color techniques. 

Parents can expect improved attention to detail, time on task, visual / spatial organization skills, creative and problem-solving skills, discipline, persistence, and patience, self-confidence and an overall “I-can-do-it” attitude.

Animal Edventure


This class will be like having the Discovery Channel right in the classroom.  Students will enjoy this unique, hands-on, interactive experience featuring a variety of live animals, including different kinds of (non-poisonous) snakes, lizards, tortoises, frogs, bugs, spiders, birds, mammals and even a wolf.  Students will be able to learn about and touch, hold and/or feel each (kid-friendly and safe to handle) animal and participate in an art project relating to the animal(s) of the week.

YB Band - September to May (Sign-ups in September only)


The band program at Yerba Buena Elementary School is open to students in grades 4 and 5 who want to learn to play a band instrument.  Instruction will be provided to students on their choice of standard band instruments, which are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone and percussion (drums or bells).  Students will be taught to play their instrument and to perform together with other student musicians.
