More Information
What is Reading Counts?
Reading Counts is a reading incentive program for students in grades 2 through 5. Our list currently includes over 2,600 titles.
How does it work?
Students select and read a book from the Reading Counts list, and then take a brief computerized quiz about it in the library. They earn points for each quiz they pass. The points vary according to the length and difficulty of the book.

Students can take quizzes during their regular library time, or on non-banking days between the hours of 12:30 and 2:00 if the teacher or another adult is present. If you would like to volunteer as a Reading Counts helper for your child's classroom, please contact his/her teacher.
How can I tell if my book is on the list?
In the school library, Reading Counts books are marked with yellow spine labels, and there are Reading Counts book lists available in the classrooms, the YB school library, and the local public libraries. You can also click the link to the right to access our interactive list of quizzes, where you can search by title, author, or reading level.
What do students do with the points they earn?
We keep track of the points each student has received, and when they reach various milestones, they are rewarded. Winning students receive prizes and certificates. They also have their names posted in the library and published in the Reading Counts newsletter.
What if the computer won't let me take a quiz?
There are many reasons why you might not be able to take a quiz.
1. You might already have passed it. You can only pass each quiz once.
2. You might have tried it too many times without passing. If you get permission from your teacher, Mrs. Minicozzi will reset the computer so you can try again.
3. It might be a restricted quiz. The list of restricted quizzes may be downloaded by clicking on the link to the right. If you want to take a restricted quiz, click on the link to the right and print out the permission slip, which needs to be signed either by your parent or your teacher. Turn the slip in to the computer lab and the quiz will be unlocked for you.
What is the Reading Counts newsletter?
We award prizes for Reading Counts approximately once a month. When we give out prizes, we also send home a copy of the Reading Counts newsletter with all students in grades 2-5. It will keep you abreast of what is happening with this entertaining reading program. The newsletter is also available on this website; just click the link to the right. The first issue will be out in October.
